A program for plotting a Polar Diagram based on “time allowances” from an IMS Certificate.
Many of us sailors have requested a plotted Polar Diagram and not only the printed IMS Certificate. Techsail has now released a handsome program that creates Polar Diagram based on the figures from the IMS calculation.
Polar diagrams. Polar Diagrams are used to determine the optimum course to sail, given existing wind conditions. They are plotted using polar coordinates, (hence the name) with true wind angle and a vector of actual boat speed.
IMS – International Measuring System
The IMS provides elapsed time corrections for a broad range of sailing yacht types utilising speed predictions from computer models based on fundamental principles of hydro- and aerodynamics. The Offshore Racing Congress (ORC) http://www.orc.org manages the system, changing it as improvements in speed prediction are developed
